DeKalb Medical Center for Nursing Practice

Quality Improvement Focus of Center for Nursing Practice

The success of any quality and patient safety program relies upon the day-to-day care provided by the nursing staff of DeKalb Medical. For this reason, DeKalb Medical created the Center for Nursing Practice, a professional entity of the Dekalb Quality Institute. The Center is charged with advancing nursing excellence at the bedside and with promoting quality and patient safety throughout all areas of the healthcare system.

The Center for Nursing Practice was established in 2008 and is comprised of nursing leaders both within and outside of DeKalb Medical. In 2009, the Center identified a core group of 20 nurses throughout the organization who are recognized bedside experts to serve as Delegates to the Center for Nursing Practice for one-year terms. The Delegates serve as role models, mentors and advocates for best-practice and professional advancement. This group actively identifies, develops and implements quality and safety initiatives that improve the care our patients receive.

Nurses benefit from the program through the improved two-way communication of quality and patient safety issues between management and staff. Patients and their families benefit from the continuous emphasis on new ways to improve quality of care and patient safety.
